Virginia City is situated on the outer eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada at 6200 ft elevation. At this elevation day-time temperatures remain mild during most of the year. We enjoy clean air throughout the year, providing the famous 100-mile view and spectacular starry nights.
Afternoon winds known as the "Washoe Zephyr" may come up unexpectedly and bring a nice cool-down. Hang on to your hat, though.
Spring
Spring in the desert brings an astonishing amount of plant life to bloom. In the City, the gardens display their greatest colors. Thanks to the cool air during the night, spring will last into late May and early June.

Winter
Winter may bring some occasional snow to the city. But the sun will quickly wrap everything with a welcome warmth. This is also the best time to see some wild horses near the roads leading to town.
Fall is a wonderful time in Virginia City. The gardens are filled with beautiful flowers. In the evening twilight you might see a deer taste some roses, or hear a coyote howl in the distance.
While the big cities in the valleys swelter in the desert heat, summer days in Virginia City are pleasantly cool. If you are out in the countryside, keep an eye on the skies: Thunderstorms can develop quickly, but they also vanish as rapidly as they appear. Oh - and drink enough fluid!
